Oh to live in Atlanta - home of Prog Power rather than at the world's butt. We are starting to get some good bands down here now with Pain of Salvation and Dream Theater coming here recently. As to my set up if you look at the first two images in the album you can see my tripod over Portnoy's left shoulder. I worked out with his drum tech, Jose exactly where to put it prior to the band's sound check. We originally set it up a lot lower next to Mike's snare as there was a bunch of room at the back of Mike's riser. We locked off the camera with gaffer tape and taped it to the left and rear sides of the riser and then Mike comes out says - nah I don't want it there.
We ended up sticking it on an amp stack next to MP again with lots of gaffer tape and a bit of wishful thinking. As you can see MP was right it was the perfect angle. A few check out images during souond check and we were away. I was using a Canon remote control on a Canon 40D with 10-22mm lens set at 10mm though there is no noticeable distortion in the shots. I set the ISO at 800 and the apeture at f4 which still gave me a lot of depth of field. I was hoping to get higher shutter speeds and of some 250 shots over the course of the concert I had about 50 keepers - most between a 1/15th and 1/50th. One is to be used as a poster at NAMM in a couple of weeks by one of Mike's endorsee companies.
I have used this set up a number of times with drummers but was really blown away that MP would let me do it. I showed him the pix and he thought it was a great angle. Thanks for your interest.
btw nice pic of doro, i would love to get some pics of her...i had such a crush on her when i was a tot, hell i still do ;-)
